Community Help Efforts

There are many ways to help the animals and caregivers of pets in your community. Below I have listed a few. Even you have recently lost your pet. When you are ready, this will sometimes help the healing process. Do it in memory of your lost baby. But don't do it until you are ready to make this decision.

1. Volunteer-There are many seniors who have had their pets for a long time and it is their only companion. Someone to love an talk to. But many have to give them up as they can no longer take care of them. For many it's just going to get the food & carrying it in the house. You could do that for them. Some cannot walk their dogs anymore but you could. Some cannot clean the litter pan- but yes- you could. By helping in a small way- could help a senior keep their pets.

2. Offer to take them to the groomer or vet.

3. Go to a shelter and walk a dog. Play with it- talk to it- throw a ball. Or just sit and pet it. Many of the animals never get the human touch of love once inside a shelters walls. Some are put down due to lack of space without ever knowing someone was there to love them.

4. Consider fostering. You cannot imagine the feeling of joy that comes with a foster- especially when you know you have probably just save a precious life.

5. Check with your local paper. See if they would be willing to start a pet Obituary. Many a person would find a great deal of comfort to have their pet mentioned in the local paper.

6. If someone you know has recently lost their animal companion. Send them a card. You can't imagine how much this will help them. Just to know someone cares. What ever you do - Don't tell them to just get another pet. This is the worst possible thing to say to anyone who is grieving the loss of their pet.

7. Check your local papers for the lost and found. You may be the one who reunites a Desperate and distraught person with their lost pet.

8. Make sure you have your own pet Spayed or Neutered. And also important -micro chipped. This could save you a lot of grief and keep your own pet safe.

9. Donate to animal organizations. They need your help & it's tax deductable.

10. Take a course in animal disaster relief.(FEMA) Then join a local animals in disasters group.

11. Meals on Wheels- Suggest they get dog food donations. There are alot of seniors who share their meals with their animals as they cannot afford to buy dog food. But without the pets - their life would be lonely & many would not want to go on. Pets are very important to seniors. Sometimes its all they have for companionship.
